In recent years, drugs and supplements based on medicinal plants have become more popular than ever. Unlike synthetic drugs, they have a milder effect, low toxicity, are not addictive, are less likely to cause allergies, do not decrease the body's defenses, improve immunity, and more.

Science knows almost 500 thousand species of plants, only about 290 of which are described as medicinal. Comfrey is among such plants, which can be called miracles of nature. It was first mentioned in the recipes of ancient China, Tibetan medicine, in ancient Zoroastrian manuscripts. The legends say comfrey is a necessary ingredient in the elixir of immortality.

For the first time the healing properties of comfrey were described by Ibn Sina in the "Canon of Medicine", where he reported that this plant was used by the ancient Greek physician and philosopher Dioscorides as a wound healing remedy. During the Renaissance, comfrey was one of the most popular medicinal herbs. Paracelsus successfully used the roots of comfrey to heal wounds, ulcers, and fractures.

Comfrey was first introduced into scientific and practical medicine by the English physician Charles J. Macalister. In 1912 he published in the British Medical Journal an article on Symphytum officinale (comfrey), where he described that allantoin derived from the roots of comfrey promotes granulation and regeneration of damaged tissues. In 1921, French phytotherapeutist, H. Leclerc, wrote in the Parisian pharmaceutical journal Bull de la Soc. d'Histoire de la Parmacie that the comfrey root is a panacea for the health surgery.

Comfrey contains an arsenal of biologically active substances, which belong to different classes and have different-sided pharmacological activity. The composition of comfrey includes allantoin, alkaloids, consolidin, vitamin B12, flavonoids, tannins, vegetable oil, carboxylic acid, rosemary acid, starch, proteins, inulin, phytosterols (beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol), saponins, and amino acids.

The most important compound determining the pharmacological properties of comfrey is allantoin, which is a powerful natural stimulant of the growth of bones, joints and, muscle tissue. Allantoin isn t produced by the human body, therefore it must come from outside. The highest concentration of natural allantoin was found in comfrey roots. Allantoin promotes wound healing, stimulates cellular regeneration without hyperplasia, and inhibits proliferation of keloid fibroblasts. Moreover, the substance has anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, astringent, and coating properties. The main feature of comfrey is its ability to accelerate regeneration of damaged tissues, especially in bones and connective tissues.

Comfrey drugs and supplements, including Dr. Christopher s ointment, are effective in bone and muscle pathologies such as rheumatoid lesions of joints and gout, osteochondrosis, arthritis and degenerative arthritis, gout, sprains, pain after amputation, broken bones, sciatica, osteomyelitis, thrombophlebitis, bone tuberculosis, and inflammation of the periosteum. The formula is known to stimulate tissue repair after trauma and burns, impetigo, intertrigo, purulent skin lesions, trophic ulcers, inflammations of the subcutaneous tissue, non-healing wounds, boils, carbuncles, hemorrhoids, proctitis, etc. Some people reported that Comfrey Ointment was effective for periodontal diseases, including purulent forms.
